Workout question!!

  • Ok guys. So my vert has been stuck at 28 inches for awhile now. My question is does anyone have an idea of what I could do to increase this? Ive been doing power cleans and Im fairly new to them but Im already doing 210 lbs. Just need some ideas. Thanks guys!!

Yep, I would pull sleds too if available, anything to help with explosiveness. Also do some exercises to strengthen your calves too. There's a lot of muscles that go into a vert so you have to do a number of excersices to improve it

Yeah, lately Ive had problems getting up early/running which has prevented me from going to football workouts in the mornings. Which sucks. But right now my toe is in REEEEEAAAAALLY bad shape. Im finally going in to get it fixed tomorrow, but Im hoping to be 100% with it before too long.

  • negative lifting with your lower body whatever lifts you do per say squats go real slow on the way down like 4 seconds and the explode up things like that to build explosiveness.

  • Im in high school right now and im a sophomore I run a 4.5 in the 40. My genes really did most of the work but not be racist or anything im African american but what helps most of us get faster is running on the beach for hours with a parachute. All of my teammates do it and we come back faster each season try it. Its hard but well worth it

Why apologize for who you are? Also if your genes help you out and you ackowledge it that does not make you racist.

  • Lol my problem with running on beaches starts with the fact that it's 30 degrees here. I live in Minnesota so that's not the easiest thing todo. But that did cross my mind today when I was brainstorming!!

  • Try rythym squats - It sounds strange, but really helps elastic strength for vertical jump. It's 50 1/4 squats. 10 explode up on your toes, 10 with feet flat, 10 on your toes, 10 flat and then 10 up on your toes. You can probably find it on youtube.

Squats w Bands - complexed with box jumps seem to work well.

  • There are many factors in this. I trained for increasing vert and went from 32 inches to 41 inches some years back. You want to be lean and mean, hard to jump with excess body fat. You want to study your take off, are u a 1 foot jumoer or two, etc. Some people have power but are not coordinated. Wear your strength shoes and jump and touch the rim 10 times on each side. Do three sets, each time u land exode immeadiately back up. Do strength training for your core, it is huge for jumping. Finally you need a string glutes and legs. Squats and lunges with dumbells help. Go heavy go deep on your squats build power.

  • Oh ya and don't forget steroids, the decrease in ball weight will help you jump higher.....lol

I'll give you a couple things:

    Depth jumps (box jumps)

Jump as high as you can with reps of 10 with a weighted vest and ankle weights on. You take them off and you feel like you can fly.

Negative lifting as mentioned earlier. (best for building fast twitch muscle fibers)

Do sprints up hill. It's a bitch, but you increase your speed, stamina and vertical.

    Good luck!!!

Going deep on squats is critical. Great point, Sheid...

  • About three years ago I did a program called Air alert 2. I was able to increase my vertical by 10 inches in about 12 weeks. It basically teaches your body how to jump in a more efficient way. And you only do body weight exercises,so you could do it in your house. All you need are sneakers and a soft surface to do the exercises on (carpet, exercise pad, etc). A jump rope is optional for a couple of the exercises too. The best thing is that it's free. Send me a message if you're interested in more info.

  • Your hip flexor is a neglected muscle when it comes to jumping. Focus on that. Thing to keep in mind, that although your calves play a part in jumping it is very small compared to lower back, glutes and quads. When I was in high school (long time ago when I still measured these things), I went from 28 to 36 inches my senior year. My coaches helped me focus on these areas. I thought it was all about the calves. They play a part but very small.

Go to a BB gym Scott & get on the machine that the bars come over your shoulders and set it where your comfortable at first. Then just give it hell, it will use muscles in your legs you never thought you had. It's a workout I used to do and it really works. It used to be called the jump machine- don't know what it's called now. When getting into this machine- your already in the squat position but, when you go up, that's where this comes in. It's a hydrolic machine and I'm sure Coach had his kids in it. The 1st time I used it, I couldn't walk for like 3 days-lol but, it really works ya my man!!
