Miami clearly needed to add cornerbacks in their 2012 recruiting class. we caught up with defensive backs coach Paul Williams to get a breakdown of the signees..

  • Im all for playing freshman right away, but like AG has been preaching since he got here.... THE BEST PLAYER WILL PLAY!!! So if it's a true freshman oh-well, but it will be nice to have a number of talented players at the CB position.. But at the end of the day I see McGee and Finnie getting the starter roles, but definately will see a few true freshman play early...

I just don't see Finnie beating out Howard even with a year of college under his belt.

    Chris,

I totally agree with you on howard over finnie. However, i think finnie could be a good one lining up on the slot receivers. He has the speed to keep up with those players.

So i think finnie, howard and mcgee will play in dime packages. When there are three receiver out there.

  • I think we may have took too many cbs we probably could have left two on the table

  • I love what we have coming in... But my friends, don't forget we are talking about D1 CFB, not high school anymore... Just because a kid is a beast in high school, that doesn't mean he's ready to come in and start in college... Now if he beats out the other players for the starting spot, well he deserved it but just to say he ready because how he played against high school players is a little bit to much for me.... McGee only really played one full year of CB, and that was last year... and Finnie was getting all the same type of hypt Howard is getting last year, and now he has a year in the system... My whole point is we can't just give guys starting jobs, everyone has to go out and compete for them... After his second year in this system, McGee will look like a different player... I see McGee and Finnie being the starter, and a lot of depth behind them...

  • Gotta agree with most of the comments here.. Howard and McGee should be the starters. Most likely Finnie as the nickel. But don't sleep on Vernon Davis. Coaches love the kid and he could steal the nickel position away if Finnie doesn't come in strong and ready to play. I agree Bush is more of a natural Safety. But his size and athleticism are intriguing at CB. So they will play him there for now and give him some reps. teach him the position and see what develops? Sleeper... Larry Hope. Remember coming in early is a tremendous advantage. Hope could rise up to challenge for nickel spot too. And the mystery man is Keion Payne. Does he remain invisible?

Respectfully.....no way. You need to analyze it from the standpoint of guys making each other better through the competition rather than just numbers.

I see what your saying but I think 5 is more than enough. And you gotta look at the cbs coming out this year. I know a good amount will redshirt. But I think maybe 2 or 3 we really reached on. Jmo

I want to agree with you but the reason I think we would be wrong is because golden allowed it, so if he feels good about bringing in 7 Db's than I feel good about it. They're players he wanted also.

I agree. I still say that Gunter will have a lot to say about the starting role. I think he will get the start on one side and the battle will be on the other which i think McGee and Finnie have the upper hand.

  • Great article, Chris.

I'm most excited about Gunter and Howard, obviously. I like the way coach talks about Davis -- expect a splash from him, as well.

I don't agree. You are assuming Howard is going to be a sure thing, well he could have a bad injury and then what do you do? You have Mcgee graduating and if Howard got hurt who would you have for next year? You are going to bet on 3 or 4 guys who are still developing?

No I think we took the right amount. Better to be safe than sorry and we had no way of knowing that we would get Howard. So you take guys like Nate Dortch and Vernon Davis and you coach them up because there's a good chance you are going to need them at some point. I don't think you considered all of these possibilities so you might change your answer after reading this.

  • I really think Crawford will be one of the steals of the class! Every time you see him play, he just makes things happen! This DB class in general, I think will be something special!

  • Vernon Davis will be the biggest sleeper in this DB class IMO.

Kid is explosive. He will at least make immediate impact on special teams as a return man. He could also be a great nickel back. Has the speed and athleticism to keep up with those quicker slot guys.

Wait, is Gunter being used at CB? I thought he was more for safety.
