Recruiting Recap: Handing Out the Grades

The University of Miami welcomed Al Golden’s first recruiting class yesterday as the class of 2011 included sixteen signees.

    Nate Adelson

  • Those are some high grades Nate.... I wish you would have been my teacher in high school!

I say this class gets a "A" for effort but a C- minus in the end (subject to Brisett's decision).... Miami closed with a whimper and fell short of a miraculous job by Golden and his staff. Of course, if Shannon had still been the coach I think Miami would have done much worse; so a C- is actually pretty good considering the alternative. But I give Miami an overall grade of "A" because they got rid of Shannon.... that fact alone trumps everything else.

To get back to prominence Miami needs to start winning soon, with FSU getting so far ahead of Miami in recruiting it is going to be hard to get back to the top.... Golden has a difficult task ahead and he must produce instant results on the field if he expects to catch up to Florida and FSU in recruiting. I think it's safe to say that FSU not only kicked our ass on the field but they kicked our ass even worse in the recruiting arena. WOW! I don't feel good after today, but let's see what Golden can do as a coach now that the dust has settled.... there is still some talent on this team for him to work with this year. Golden is the biggest recruit this year and I'm very happy about that.....I think that he has the right plan and work ethic to turn things around and build the proverbial wall around the "State of Miami"!

  • RB: should be incomplete, WR: C+ at most, Tight Ends: D, Defensive Back: C

  • Overall grade B- im amazed with wut coach Golden has done in the short time hes done it

  • A solid B for golden and his staff. The effort was strong on their part and they probably pulled a sneaky good class that will produce in the future. Chickillo and Perryman as the anchor. Unfortunately the other big names didn't pull it and I don't see us getting Brissette. Do we need to beat FSUdoo next year to out recruit them?

Probably wouldn't hurt our chances if we did, but I think Golden will do wonders now that he has an entire year to recruit, it MIGHT not be immediate but then again Rome wasn't built in a day!

  • I think coach Golden has imediate success recruiting

    mikeperez58

  • Nate usually respect your opinions BUT B- is WAY too high for this Miami recruiting class. If Golden was still at Temple I would give it a B As it stands now the best I would give it D, If Brisset signs on Friday, at his Basketball Teams Senior day, then I would raise it to a C-/C. I feel there are too many space fillers in here.

    Canes1,

As usual you are spot on with your assessment...Landing Brissett would be huge and should bump the grade up...

FSU had a great class and set the standard...Golden is going to do fine in due time...He has a plan and a direction something the previous regime clearly lacked...The question now is can he get the best out of the players on the roster and develop the talent?

Most of the players on Miami's roster, FSU and UF recruited as well save for a few guys...Miami has talent ...However it will need to change the culture and mentality of accepting mediocrity...If Golden can do that next year will be a success...But like you said he will still need to produce results...

2012 will be an important year for UM on the recruiting trail...

Brissett's final 3 are UF, Wisconsin, and Us. And you don't see us getting him? So that would leave UF and Wisconsin. UF is bringing in the #1 QB, so there is a very real chance he would be holding a clipboard for 4 years there, and Wisconsin signed a highly recruited QB as well, and the weather there speaks for itself? Here at the U, he redshirts, and then has a real shot at starting 2 years, AND it's close to home, AND his mom loves the U, and out of the three, he would have the best shot of playing for the basketball team here. TrueUCannon, please share why you think he's going to UF or Wisconsin, dying to hear your logic!

  • You are forgetting something here, boys....You can't judge a class til 2 or 3 years down the road. Grimble could be a bust for all we know and Crawford could be the next Deion Sanders. Another thing you are forgetting is this...Mohammed Wilkerson. Are you kidding me??? Coach 'em up, D'onofrio!!!

  • Grading is fine and all but I'll stick with player development and a winning attitude. I just read an article in another site where they listed the most underachieving classes of the decade. Guess who was #1?....Miami's 2004 highly ranked class...where we show cased Lance Leggett, Willie Williams, Bobby Washington, Charlie Jones, James Bryant, Andrew Johnson....

One of the last lines of the article: "a class that eventually represented the fall of the most fearsome dynasty of the first half of the decade."

    Coach'em up AG!!

I think we did alright considering all facts. The most important thing about this class is we got players that want to play at The University of Miami. Now the question is can they develop can they balance school/being an athlete. Can they start learn how to practice when no one is watching.... Thats the real question....and the the #1 Question can A.G. Keep them inspired to believe in the program, system and play with passion and excitement.????

    10-2 ACC Champions
    3 first team All- Americans
8 All ACC offense and defense

  • Its kinda hard to grade the staff on this class, I would break it down like this, due to circumstances B+ (could be an A- with Brissett)
Overall C- (will move to B- with Brisset).
Circumstances were very tough, very short time frame to recruit and not a ton of space. I think if they could have flipped one more like B Moore or Lucien it would have been a great job. Either way I am extremely impressed with this class and think we are in good hands.

  • Nate,

There is 1 position that you wrote about that I think you're dead wrong about and that is the LB's. I would lay money RIGHT NOW that all 4 of those guys will hit the field this year. Whether it's on ST's or Def. I believe they play... They are by the looks of it the biggest LB's on the team already, and wait until Swasey gets them in the weigh room... No more of 195/200 LB's the last regime use to recruit... It's down right amazing what this coaching staff was able to accomplish in basiclly a month....
What's the next class going to look like when they have an entire year.... FOOget ABouuttt IT!!!!!!!!!!

  • I have been following Miami recruiting for several years. This is the first board post where I think that people have no idea what they are talking about. If I hear one more thing about FSU I will scream. They took a great class this year. it means nothing. all their offensive line is gone, ponder is gone. Manuel sucks. we have more talent coming back the anyone in the acc.

next subject, Golden gets A...for what he accomplished. A+ with Jacoby. biggest problem last couple years, size. we add actual linebackers with strength. Defensive ends with strength. solid wide outs. one thing all these guys have in common, they will go to war for the U. they got tattoos,

bedrooms, living rooms, dreams designated to getting the U back to the top.

We need kids who feel they need to earn the U...not that it was given to them. we got that in every interview I read with this class. that's how The U was founded, and Al just set him self up with a foundation to kill it next year!

  • One last note on this class...it was put together without having an entire staff in place and kids from South Florida didn't know who Coach Golden was.
