Bro 16 lbs is the weight for shot put balls at HS, College and Pro levels lol. I dont know if you wrote that to make some realize how great of an achievement that is, but I have never seen someone write that when talking track before lol. That's equivalent of someone stating the height of the hurdles when Artie Burns competes IMO

  • Specifications- There are 18 and 20 pound shots for practice using a heavier weight not not used in official competition.. I threw the shot at all levels and know the weights. Read below. I think you find it informative.

Competition for children is organized by USATF into age groups that span two years. The age groups are determined by the child’s age at the beginning of the year. Those 8 years of age and younger use a 4.4 lb. shot. It increases to 6 lb. for 9- to 12-year-olds. In the 13- to 14-year-old age group, girls continue to use the 6 lb. shot while boys use an 8.8 lb. shot put. In the 15- to 18-year-old brackets, the USATF shot weights are the same as high school weights set by NFHS: Boys throw a 12 lb. shot while girls throw an 8.8 lb. shot.
    Open Age Groups

In NCAA, Olympic, national and international competition, men use a 16 lb. shot while women continue to use the 8.8 lb. shot. National and international competitions for junior men or those younger than 20 years of age at the beginning of the year use a 13.2 lb. shot.
    Masters

Older athletes compete in five age groups. Men 30 to 49 years old continue using the 16 lb. shot used by open age group men. Fifty-year-old men use a 13.2 lb. weight. The weight of the shot decreases by 2.2 lb. every decade. Sixty-year-old men use an 11 lb. shot, 70-year-olds use an 8.8 lb. shot, and men over 80 years use a 6.6 lb. shot. Women continue to use the 8.8 lb. shot until they reach 50 years of age. The shot then drops in weight to 6.6 lb. for women up to 74 years of age. Women older than 75 years of age use a 4.4 lb. shot.

True...Andre won the Big East 10.59 at 220 lbs. An often forgotten ball player was CB Terrell Walden a local high school product who was 10.4 as a freshman until a bad knee injury really hurt his career thereafter-- I believe he got back to a 10.77 not bad but it appeared he was headed for the 10.2-10.3 range.- I believe it was 2004.. WR Randall Hill around 1990 was in the 10.3 range. Rosco Parrish ran a 220 in 21.13 Santana Moss was one of the tops in the state at 200m in high school and a tremendous 60m man in the Big East. winning in 6.83 one year.

Dorsett will get under 10.5 as in high school he was one heck of a track performed here are his official bests-- 100 Meter Dash 10.51
    110 Meter Hurdles 15.05 , 200 Meter Dash 21.26, 300 Meter Hurdles 38.76 400 Meter Dash 48.32 Long Jump 24-7.75
Triple Jump 47-9.5--Remember he is running track, spring football practice and doing the strength and conditioning program for football at the same time.

Few remember that Ed Reid was one heck of an all around athlete has the best Javelin throws in UM track history------At the U he recorded a 23.6 long jump, 47.8 triple jump and javelin throw of 217.58.

REED-HIGH SCHOOL: Destrehan...an All-State and All-County selection at defensive back and as a kick returner...New Orleans Times-Picayune District Most Valuable Defensive Player...totaled 83 tackles, seven interceptions, three fumbles caused and 12 passes defended his senior year...also saw action at running back and quarterback...returned three punts for touchdowns...state qualifier in the javelin and 4x100 relay...long jumped over 24 feet and triple jumped over 46...averaged 20 points as member of basketball team as a senior...coached by Scott Martin.

Keep up the discussion as it is interesting to reminisce.

here is an email exchange with Mike Ward our old track coach

In my 16 years at the u santana moss best 40 yd guy. Best 100m guy wr
daryl jones #1 jersey. Very close to him is andre johnson wr. Fastest
white guy #26 aaron moser special team player of the year 2x and ran
10.40 in decathlon 100m at ncaa championships. There have been a lot of
good fb track runners. This name will really test your canes history.
Tory mitchell out of tyler texas was the most herald fast fb'er never
developed to his potential in fb or track in his 2 yrs atthe u. His life
tragical passed a year or so ago in tyler texas. Thanks have a great
    memoril day coach mike ward

  • Chambers was a state champ in the 100 but at a very slow time. Do not
see him helping us in track. Mcneal is running but not effective as yet
due to football injuries. Leggett was the real deal as a hurdler, great
hurdler with limited traing. But all these guys want to be fb'ers.
Hester was not a good 100m guy, decent 60 guy, he was a big east long
jump champ at 25 ft. I saw him when bears played in superbowl and his
body change to more sleak and fast. He may have been to heavy speed wise
at the u. Santana was a 26 ft plus long jumper. So moss and hester have
the explosive power to be the fastest guys. In the nfl they seem to be
    very fast.
The big east sprints were very weak and we killed the league. The acc is
just the opposite, fsu and clemson have two of the best sprint programs
in the country. So we have some work to be done. Coker did not push the
guys to get better by running, shannon will get push them to get better.
    Time will tell. Enjoy

I'm pretty familiar with shot put as a good friend of mine is Dorian Scott who is from Jamaica and any time he sets a PR it's a national record. He is now the throws coach for FSU. I was just saying no one ever mentions the weight of shot put when describing a performance, like no one mentions the specifications of a javelin, hurdle, steeplechase and etc. I know guys practice with heavier balls but I stated for HS, Pro, and College they use 16 lbs balls and I didnt think I had to elaborate and say during competitions because that's the only time competition actually means something. As I mentioned it's like guys practice hurdling a lower heights and some at higher heights for workouts but during races for college and pro the hurdles are the same height for each event

Holy bleep dude, calm down. For us who aren't Shot Put specialists, it was good insight to write down the weight of the ball. Stop over-correcting people who bring good info to the boards. Thanks Stout for this thread, it was really good stuff.
