Official Miami Hurricanes Hockey Thread

  • The University of Miami held their first hockey game tonight at Kendall Ice Arena. This is the first year the University has ever had an ice hockey program. After winning a Roller Hockey National Championship last year, the future for an ice team looked promising...and tonight the boys delievered.

The Hurricanes hosted Florida Institute of Technology, and won the game 22-1.

  • That's good stuff man 22-1 lol!! I remember a few times back in my little league days of hockey scoring 25 goals on a team... I take it the competition isn't very great what big time programs does the team face this year? Keep me posted with this stuff hockey is my sport brotha

  • There is some solid competition down here - FGCU and UCF have made several National Championship appearances, and FAU went last year.

F.I.T. is one of the weaker teams in the conference, but we very much appreciate their willingness to schedule us, especially on such short notice. Being a new team is difficult, because other schools do not know about us and therefore aren't jumping at an opportunity to play us...for all they know, we are another team they will just "roll" over.

  • Hurricanes Hockey has moved itself to 13-0, defeating FAU 12-4 at our Bank Atlantic Center event today! We were missing 2 starters, but the team played very hard and earned itself a nice win, despite starting out a little slow. FAU has been the toughest team the Hurricanes have yet to fave, as they made an appearance at the National Championships last season.

Friday 2/24 and Saturday 2/25 the Hurricanes hockey team will be playing exhibition games against the Spacecoast Hurricanes, a "Junior A" level team in the Eastern Junior Hockey League. The Spacecoast Hurricanes have already defefeated UCF and FGCU, who are perenially #1 and #2 teams in the ACHA Southeast. Both games will be at 8:30pm @ Kendall Ice Arena.

  • Hurricanes Hockey dropped its first game last night, losing 6-4 to the Spacecoast Jr. Hurricanes of the Eastern Junior Hockey League (EJHL). The 'Canes started fast and ended the 1st period with a 3-0 lead, but the Junior-A hockey level of conditioning prevailed at the end. This same Spacecoast team has already defeated the UCF Golden Knights and the FGCU Eagles this season - teams that are perennial #1 and #2 seeds in the ACHA Southeast division.

For those who aren't aware, the EJHL is considered to be the #2 Junior-A hockey league in North America, behind only the United States Hockey League (USHL). These leagues are designed to get players ready for the NCAA Division-1 level, and sometimes even professional hockey. Hockey is much different than any other sport, as Minnesota is the only state where players go straight to college from high school, because their level of play and the talent of players there is much greater than anywhere else (much like FL or TX football, but to a higher degree).

Including two forfeit wins UM picked up from F.I.T. (who decided to cancel after losing 22-1), Hurricanes Hockey now sits at 15-1-0. They have a rematch against the Spacecoast Hurricanes tonight, at Kendall Ice Arena @ 8:30pm.

  • I love college hockey! My daughter and I are huge Michigan hockey fans (we went to BG, Ohio to watch them lose last night :-( ) I attended Ohio U and watched many games on winter weekends and OU is usually pretty good at this ACHA level. My daughter and I will be attending nationals this year which are in Cleveland... where I live... too bad UM won't be there this year. Miami has a hockey team... hot damn!!!!

  • Hurricanes Hockey finished its season with wins over LIFE University, winning 8-0 on Friday night and 4-2 on Saturday night.

Friday was "Senior Night" and honored the departing upperclassmen and grad students. Saturday also gave those seniors a large amount of ice-time, which served as the coaching staff's "thank you" for their hard work and efforts throughout this inaugural season.

Including two forfeit wins over F.I.T., the Hurricanes finished their first season with a record of 16-2, and a record of 16-0 against collegiate/ACHA opponents. Next year's schedule is already in the process of being made, and the Hurricanes will be playing all the top-notch, ranked teams in hopes of earning themselves a national ranking and bid to the national championships. Stay tuned!
