Moving to the Big 12

  • tampa_tuck said...

You do realize that all this talk was started by one reporter and he was told to his face by the President of FSU that it wasn't happening. You guys are coming up with your own ideas of what you would like to happen for some reason, but it won't happen!

P.S. FSU won't be playing Pitt, BC, or Syracuse every year and Clemson isn't going anywhere!

You do realize that at FSU the President has no say in this matter. It is up to the board of trustees, who have told the President that he either gets on board with them or he will be gone!!! FSU is going to the Big12, the Big12 will pay the 20mil buyout and will loan FSU an additional 5 mil. It's going to happen!!!!!

FSU would regret the decision to move to the Big 12. It's only a matter of time before NDs run as a football independent is up. The ACC is imo the best match for the Irish. you throw in a Penn State as well and the ACC is solid. If Clemson wants to leave, let them, lets shore up Rutgers and really monopolize on our TV Markets.

The 20 mil exit fee to leave the ACC is all but worked out. The B 12 will pay a good portion of that with money it got paid from the teams that left the B 12 last year. Also, with Clemson, WVU, and others jumping on board, travel will be virtually no different than the new ACC ie. Pitt, BC, and Syracuse...

The $20M will be paid from the exit fees from A&M and Missouri? From all published media reports in the B12, those funds were dispersed to the remaining schools to offset their losses from the smaller TV contract. That money is long gone. Where do you come up with this information?

And you're going to tell us that the travel costs for FSU and Clemson will be a wash? Instead of traveling to Atlanta, Miami, Washington DC, Raleigh, Charlottesville, Chapel Hill, Greensboro, the Clemson Tigers and Florida State Noles get to go to Ames, Lubbock, Manhattan KS, Lawrence, Ft. Worth, Austin, OK City and Waco in the midwest. Really? A wash?

  • Man, I don't know what you guys are reading but it is getting hotter everyday on our board. Something is going down and ND isn't looking to get left out of that mini playoff either. Remember, our BOT came out and basically blasted the ACC, UNC, and Swoffy. That happend!!! Our board of trustees is not happy and is truely looking at moving and working on a deal as we speak. The FSU Prez. will follow suit or suffer cosequences imo...Could all this fall apart? Yes. Is that likely now? No. Miami should be exploring their options and maybe they are...Once again, our travel cost will not eat up the profits we make in this move. We will do much, much better financially and have more flexibility. If we stayed in the ACC under this New Deal, FSU would be in trouble finacially imo...

    NoleDude

  • Bottom line is soon there will be 4 - 16 team super conferences that get to compete for a National Title. SEC - Pac12 - Big10 - Big12. It will be a 4 team play-off with Pac12 vs Big10 and SEC vs Big12 round 1 match-ups. If Miami doesn't leave with FSU and Clemson, we will be left out in the cold. ND and Penn State are not going to the ACC.

The Texas Conference will float them a welfare check before the conference tv pie is sliced.

This is the counterpoint you will hear when an FSU fan or that texas lego dude wonders back over here.

The conference will pay FSU's bills before hand.

AMELIA ISLAND — We’ll keep this brief — still working on adding Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher’s comments from earlier this afternoon to the blogroll — but figured this was worth passing along.

As you probably know by now from reading the Chopping Block and other sites during his past week (if you don’t know, you’ve apparently been shut off from the intriguing world that is modern-day college football), the Seminoles have been the subject of rumor and speculation, mystery and intrigue.

Monday afternoon, all of it went up — tenfold.

On Warchant.com, a website devoted to covering FSU athletics and recruiting, emails surfaced from school president Eric Barron sent to fans who had first written him messages about the school’s status with respect to the on-again, off-again affair the Seminoles apparently have with the Big 12 Conference.

If you need to get caught up on the entire drama, make sure you check out this Chopping Block blog from Sunday.

After putting his foot down in a somewhat strongly-worded statement sent to reporters late Saturday night, Barron has, with even more force, let it be known that he wants his school to stay in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Leaving the ACC would be a gross academic miscalculation, he believes.

In what appears to be a standard email he has begun sending to fans who ask him about the potential for FSU to move to the Big 12, Barron slammed the Midwest-based conference and reaffirmed his commitment to the conference his school currently is in.

As the fates would have it (coincidence? I think not), the ACC currently is holding its annual meetings on Amelia Island. Day 1 of the three-game series of meetings just concluded a couple of hours ago.

    ***

Now, earlier in the day, Fisher — who had told Orlando Sentinel columnist Mike Bianchi on Saturday that the Seminoles ought to explore options with the Big 12 if that’s “what’s best for Florida State” – had the following to say. It aligns a little more with what Barron was saying about sticking with the ACC.

“All I said Saturday was … I had never read the contract, I had no idea what the contract was. But I said the powers that be will make the decisions for Florida State. That’s the board of trustees and the president,” Fisher said.

“That’s all I said that day. They’ll do what’s good for Florida State. We’re in the ACC. That’s where we’re at. And I’m not a decision-maker.”

This is from two days ago! Doesn't sound like the President got the same memo you got! LOL, this crap is being feed by your boards! Everyone else that really has a say in the matter is saying this is a dead issue! Let it die, it makes no sense!

  • Um, who paid WVUs buyout??? The Big 12 paid a good portion of that, FACT!!! Buyouts, money and Tiers are all negotiated to a degree...They are negotiating now. If FSU and Clemson leaves, maybe Swoffy will find away to get a better deal negotiated with ESPN lol...That new ACC deal will be Null and Void without FSU and Clemson...

This will never happen! First ND and other mid majors will not allow it because that would block them from ever having a chance at playing for a national championship. There will just be another TCU or Boise State to deal with. Teams that don't play against top teams and stack up great records after great records with a upset every now and then. Just enough to raise hell with the big boys. Second, the SEC won't go for it because they would never have more then one team playing for the championship, which will cost them tons of money.

It will end up being a plus one deal, with the top 4 BCS schools. This is the only way that makes sense. You would have a hard time finding a 5th ranked school that really has a true claim to play for the Championship. The 5th place team most likely will have already lose in a head to head with a team that's already playing for the championship making the argument mute!

    1. Bullshit. Orrin Hatch & Congress would be all over that.

    2. Texas doesn't want to expand, so it ain't happening.

    3. More importantly ESPN doesn't want this to happen, so it ain't happening.

    4. If it did happen it would be F$U & Loserville, not Clemson. And a conference with Miami, Va Tech & Clemson isn't getting shut out of any playoff.

If it did happen FSU, Clemson, Louisville, Georgia Tech are going to the Big12.
The SEC will counter that with Virginia Tech and NC State
The Big10 and Big12 will go after V.Tech but will lose to the SEC - then the Big10 will look at Rutgers, Boston College, Maryland, and Cincinnati
Big12, Big10, and Pac12 will fight for Notre Dame
Then the Big12 would hopefully look at Miami for the 15th or 16th spot
There will be no ACC for football. The ACC wants to be a basketball conference!!!!!!

The President is not allowed to speak on anything that would even give the slightest hint that FSU is considering the Big 12.

    Why?

Because then the ACC could sue the Big 12 for tampering with a member of their conference.

It's all politics from here on out, good cop/bad cop routine (see President Barron -- former AD at the Univ of Texas, and then our BOT member speaking Pro-Big 12.) Everything is done through back channels etc to keep off the grid.

There are certain procedures that a school must first do behind closed doors before you see on your ESPN ticket "Florida State will join the Big 12 in 2013" Those procedures are being done now. You will see an announcement sometime in late June, after the new Big 12 commish is announced on 6/15.

This is 100% happening, Florida State has already agreed in principal on a deal with the Big 12, and Clemson has as well. The talks between Notre Dame and the Big 12 have heated up over the last 24-hours as well.

Since we're all "247 family" here is the latest update for 5/22 from Brian Ethridge of 247sports (broke last years Big 12 shakeup)

Notre Dame could be on the clock soon. The Big 12 has two members of the ACC ready to move, but will the Big 12 become 12, 14, or 12.5?

Notre Dame has 27 months to exit the Big East in it's Olympic sports and 2015 for it's NBC contract to expire in football home games.

    Option One

Once thought untouchable in their desire to be independent in football the new BCS vote could nudge them towards a conference.

The conference currently in the lead is the Big 12, but the contract with NBC creates considerable problems. First, the contract runs until 2015 which would mean an extremely high buyout and bad will between the network and a possible future business partner.

Second, Notre Dame would need to buy out of any game currently scheduled.

These two issues will remain for another 3 years and could lead to another option.

    Option Two 12.5

Olympic sports enter in 2014. The Big East requires a 27 month process, but as seen last year West Virginia broke that with a large buyout with help from the Big 12.

If this occurs estimates of 1.5-2 million dollars per school will be added to the Tier 2 deal. Once Clemson and Florida State are added, this would push the total package near 26 million before the conference championship game.

    Option Three

Go to 14 and wait on Notre Dame to join as the 15th school and bringing a 16th team to complete the superconference. This is highly unlikely at this time.

    Clemson and Florida State

Both of these schools are ready to move forward, but must wait for the inclusion of West Virginia, TCU, and newly named Big 12 Commissioner to be officially placed into the conference.

Once this is done a vote is expected to accept both into the Big 12.

We'll have more tomorrow as this saga continues to unfold.

This is total BS! This guy is from Big 12 country and is just throwing crap against the wall to see who will believe it! This guy knows nothing! If this was really that close to happening the president wouldn't be fighting against it this hard! He would just be quite and let the cards fall. As far as being sued, if this were to happen, FSU would get sued like hell! The ACC contract was just signed and let's just say FSU leaves after one year. ESPN would void that contract and the smaller schools would sue the hell out of them! WVU's buyout was only 5 mil, but it ended up costing over 20 mil after they were sued! Just think how much FSU would have to pay! Just total BS!!!

    signature image signature image

    tampa_tuck

  • Just because you think it's total BS, doesn't make it total BS, no matter how many exclamation points you use after saying BS. And no, the ACC really has no grounds to sue the hell out of anyone after Syracuse and Pittsburgh. I can see your mind is made up on this topic though lol. There's a reason that there's a $20 million buyout clause, meaning, pay $20 million and you can leave the ACC. There's a reason why FSU voted AGAINST that same buyout clause being $34 million initially like the ACC wanted. So no, there won't be any major lawsuits as long as everything is done accordingly. You will see in due time though. shrug

Really? A wash?

This was my same thought yesterday. How many people can truly afford to constantly traveling that far? There is no more road trip. There are not flights and rental cars to consider not to mention more time off of work. Even with that being said, I still think Clemson and FSU will be looking for the exit doors in the very near future. The money they will be receiving is too enticing to pass up. I do remember hearing that some of Mizzous and TAMs buyout money would be used to help pay FSUs buyout. All that is speculation, but I did hear it.

+1 Bushido. Thanks for the update or any knowledge you have on this crazy subject. I for one do not know many of the details other than what is on the surface.

Just because you think it's total BS, doesn't make it total BS, no matter how many exclamation points you use after saying BS. You will see in due time though. shrug

I guess you missed the part where WVU had to pay over 20 mil to leave the Big East and their buyout was only 5 mil. Cuse and Pitt are coming to the ACC and looking forward to getting the revenue from playing the likes of FSU and should they leave and cause the ACC to fall, there will be lawsuits. But remember your getting this info from a blogger! LOL

If the president has no say in the matter, why are people on here acting like Shalala wouldnt let us go to the Big 12 because shes all about academics? Presidents might not have a formal vote but they have a lot of pull and influence on any university issue.
