Miami Fan Base are Bullys!!

  • I am just not sure who Shark is referring to. Obviously meant for one(some) person on this board. I think that is the question. We have always had a fickle fan base. In the 01 NC game it was a see of Red for Nebraska, their was like one section for Miami(possible exaggeration.). Thats what made us great, crappy stadium, crappy fair weather fans and neither mattered cause we still will punch you in the mouth.

Envy the past, Fear the future

  • Well hell I can't blame Shark....in some strange way I kind of feel where he is coming from. One of the reasons why Hauerman committed to ND was because of our fanbase. I remember he said there was a major attendance difference between our spring game compared to OSU and ND spring games. Now I know one of the factors of us not having a stadium on campus is one of the reasons why we cannot fill Sunlife stadium however our fanbase sucks. I remember being at the Ohio State game last year and if it was for the huge amount of fans from OSU that traveled the stadium would have looked empty. It is important for us to be at every home game regardless if we play Bethune Cookman or FSU

I think this is meant for a lot of fans, some not even on this board. I just think he was venting because our own fans don't believe! One of the problems is most fans only go back to 2001 and all the all Americans from that team. If you took back 5-6 years before that, you would see a totally different canes team. Our fan base wasn't always this bad neither! We weren't going to break any records, but we had kids from south Florida and we reached out to family and friends and they packed the stadium. We never traveled well, because our fan base tends to be less financial secure and it cost a lot of money to take a flight from Miami to Cali, plus hotel, plus missing work because the game is on a week day. Bottom line us old timers have seen this before and understand we will be back.

Man yo U got me some pumped. Its like u were talking about Jesus or something. We'll be back with a vengence! Oh and I wanted to know, when we were on our down fall back then were nole fans beating there chest like they are now?

Were they!? They had Charlie Ward, Peter Warrick, Warrick Dunn this was their time. And like I said, all my friends were FSU fans! Back in the early to mid 90's you didn't see canes fans all over the country like you do now. It was south Florida and a few sprinkled in from other places.

Scott, What you got to understand is that what we did, had never been done before and people couldn't believe that this small school was legit. You didn't have nearly as much media as we do now and all the insiders and stuff. So when someone like SI writes a story on why your college should drop the sport, there is no one to counter that or give the real facts. Plus you also have to remember SMU getting dealth penalty was pretty recent, so we didn't know what was going to happen to us. You really have no clue how bad it was back then. You had the Luke thing going on, Pell Grant thing going on, and the calling card thing. Its was crazy if you were a Canes fan and now where to really get the facts, because we were so hated.

  • All you guys keep talking bout back then in 85,86,87 etc and that's fine but some of us are in our twenties so we may not have experienced all the Cane hate but it doesn't make us any less of a fan. Some of us were babies at the timr but there is still blatant hate for Miami and we see it. I started liking the Canes in 97 when I was 11, I dont have to meet anyone else's qualifications to be a fan

  • I really believe Miami has a lot of fans, but the fact of the matter is right now for a lot of people money isn't like it was in the 80's and 90's.... Everything is going up and a lot of people are struggling with finances right now, then on top of that UM is not really a eye catcher when it comes to spending money on going to games; true fan or not... Some people just refuse to pay money to go watch a team that isn't really hot right now!!! But I really feel once things start to turn around for the Canes, people will find ways to make the games... I have been a UM fan since the 90's and I haven't been to a game, so what... All Cane fans don't have to go to games to be a true fan, long as you support your team through the good and the bad your good to me....

I don't understand that? I do know that. All I'm saying is that they still hate us. Everyone on here knows how much everyone hates us. How much they hated us because we were the "classless class of the field" or so I've heard it called. You can't be a cane fan and not know this stuff. Sure I got to the Miami fan game "late" but that doesn't mean I haven't read everything about Miami I can get my hands on. I dont understand what you guys are referring to as "worse" people hating us? People talking about hating us? Or the nerves being wracked up about getting the death penalty?

  • Once we start winning and the dark cloud lingering over the program passes alot of the whining and negativity will stop like it always does. Watching the Canes for more than 25 years I have seen alot of the ups and downs. I can see why are fan base has been whinning and complaining for the past 7 years we have sucked balls. Atleast in the mid to late 90's we had excuse for losing being hit hard by the ncaa knocked to 50 schollys someone correct me if I am wrong. But here of late that has not been the excuse I have watch the canes teams quit ,examples the last game in the OB against UVA and the Sun B against ND that disguest me. We have had a bad run of coaches starting with Coker to Shannon but the change has taken place and Golden will restore what we have been lacking passion. On the topic of haters we always had them and always will. Regarding fans venting I just read what they post and either agree with them or disagree and roll with it just my thoughts.

Basically what we're saying is that all the gloom and doom is not needed. We have been in worst shape and come back. This post had nothing to do with us being hated. Yes everyone knows were hated, but back in the 80's and 90's it was just new. All were saying is that the new jacks to this thing keep acting like this is new and like we won't recover. This is just a phase and we will return. The road map is there and as long as we follow it, we'll be fine.

  • Winning cures all.... now I am asking cause I am not 100% sure. But isn't the entire city of Miami like this..... Did the Heat pack out when losing, what about the Marlins, and do the Dolphins pack it out as well. I at times think the diversity in that city plays a part. Also Miami is a huge city that attracts the A listers, the night owls and the wealthy. And most of those people are not sports fans..... to me Miami is like Vegas people come there for other things besides sports. The canes have a very loyal yet smaller fan base. It is loud and proud but just not many..... JMO

Ok I feel you. And considering I'm probably one of these "new jacks" lemme explain what I think is going through our heads. Do I believe we will come back? Absolutely. The problem I've had and why I have such a gloom outlook at times is more because of the fact that after watching one of our games everyone knew we didn't care about being there. I know that will change over time, but until I see us coming out and playing CANES football. We still are gonna be bottom of the barrel. I believe along with many of my other fellow realists as we prefer to be called are ones that are excited for the future however have had our hearts broken too many times to dare believe the hype. I know we've been Down before but much like butch Davis back in the day, we HAVE the right coach for the job. Man... Great... Now I'm getting ancy just thinking about this upcoming season lol!!

Again I ask, when the Heat were losing, the Marlins losing did those stadiums stay packed.... the sports fans that are there are die hard. But as the city as a whole is not a sports city.... and it isn't the sports fault at all. It is the different cultures there and that those cultures are not big sports cultures....

Come down for the Miami Central vs Miami Northwestern game. U can sit with me at the 50. Then I can open your eyes to the beautiful inner city of Miami where Football is not a sport but a religon. Its a way of life. Nothing else matters but football, basketball is cool but nothing like that contact sport with the pig skin. Baseball is for the cubans in Hialeah n lil havanna. And if u come, as a bonus you'll get to see Joe Yearby, Dalvin Cooke, Artie Burns, n Jo Jo Robinson all on one field.

You still aren't answering my question.... are there areas in Miami that is all sports, sure, But the fact remains the teams around there have a following but compared to others it is a small following. And I am not sure any HS game could come close to the one I saw in Texas while in Houston.... it felt collegeish....

I am not saying that sports is not watched there but it isn't as huge as you think....

How u gon tell me something bout my own city? Im from Miami and im telling U that a pop warner game brings in 5000 people. Miami alone is more of a sports town than the rest of florida.

Sports is more than football. And you are taking it ad if I am saying football isn't life there cause it is. But Miami isn't a big sports town... and there is a difference with HS and College. As not all have college ties or root for college teams but most all do for HS....

Football is THE sport down here! Would U like to watch ESPN's The U so u can see how passionate the fans were of the Canes?

We must be on two different topics.... I am talking Miami as a city and how it isnt a big aporta town, and you are talking inner city HS and pop Warner with the passion of Cane fans and how those are supported.

BTW I never said any of those things just tha the city if Miami isn't a big sports town.... just look at the empty seats at the pro stadiums.... When they aren't winning.... not the HS and pop Warner leagues

  • South Florida is a horrible sports town if the teams aren't winning.
