Jermaine Grace OLB, Miramar, runs a 4.43

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- There's little doubt that Miramar (Fla.) linebacker Jermaine Grace is a great athlete.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound junior racked up 115 tackles and four sacks last season for the Patriots en route to an appearance in the Class 8A state championship game.

Jermaine Grace already has offers from Miami, Florida, FSU and South Florida, among others.
On Saturday, in the Elite Scouting Services combine at Cardinal Gibbons, Grace ran an eye-popping 4.43 in the 40-yard dash. While that number was surprising to several observers, it wasn't a shock to Grace.

"I expected to go low, but I don't think that was the best run I could have," Grace said. "I still have to continue to get faster and get better with all my movements."

As one of the state's premier outside linebackers, Grace is being recruited by many of the top programs in the state of Florida.

This year, he will also be expected to be a leader on and off the field. He is one of the few returning members of last season's Miramar team that lost 31-20 to Plant (Tampa, Fla.) in the championship game.

"I have high expectations for Jermaine like I do for all of my players," Miramar coach Damon Cogdell said. "He's going to be a senior and he's going to be one of the guys that will be crucial to us returning where we were last year and getting over that hump.

"The way last season ended was tough on Jermaine and tough on many of the outgoing seniors that are his best friends. I know he wants to get back there and win for himself and his teammates, the ones that are here now and last year's group."

Grace is putting himself through quite a rigorous offseason schedule that he hopes will make the difference this season.

"I'm working out a lot and participating in events like this one," Grace said. "I'm also doing 7-on-7 with my team and with the South Florida Express.

"Really just staying busy with football stuff and trying to do all the little things I can to improve."

College programs are noticing Grace's work as well. He already has offers from Miami, Florida, FSU, South Florida and North Carolina, and even Texas and Texas A&M.

"I was shocked to hear about an offer from Texas and Texas A&M," Grace said. "They haven't talked to me much; they are talking to Coach Cogdell primarily."

Grace said that Penn State, Tennessee and Miami keep in touch with him the most these days. He attended Miami's junior day event and considers himself a Hurricanes fan.

"Miami was the only junior day I could get to. I was invited to a bunch of them but transportation was an issue," Grace said. "Miami is a great school for me and I grew up as a fan of the Hurricanes, but I'm taking everything in and I'm going to look at some other possibilities.

"I'm going to be taking in a lot of camps over the next few months. Probably the NFTC camp in April and Friday Night Lights will definitely be one of the camps I go to. We usually go to the Jimbo Fisher camp at FSU and the West Virginia camp as well."

While Grace's due diligence will be appreciated by the other schools recruiting him, his former teammate, Tracy Howard, is hopeful that they can reunite in Miami.

"I made a promise to Tracy that we'd go to the same school and we shook hands on it and everything," Grace said. "But what's good for him might not be the best for me and he understands that.

"I'm going to continue to let everything fall in place and I know the right school will be in front of me."

  • What the? A linebacker running a 4.4? That's crazy! He has to be a priority then especially after hearing that!

  • Can somebody explain to me the transportation issue??? Do people in Florida have cars?

Miami to Gainesville = 5 hours by car
Miami to Tallahassee = 8/9 hours by car

Florida is not a small state by any means. It's not a state you can just cross the bridge into the next state. For some of these kids who may not have reliable cars, that's a long way to walk.

  • Really? Coach you know damn well a lot of these kids families are extremely tight on money. I doubt it's because his family is without a car. It's gas money, someone to drive him cause I doubt he owns a car, food, hotel. That adds up fast. An official is another story obviously. Anyway, this kid sounds like he is a Cane, but will wait until the end. Let's hope, he's got stud written all over him. 6'2 and blazing. Safety or LB, doesn't matter to me!

I have sons, my oldest is 16. At that age, they dont have an understanding of what giving your word to someone means. This dude loves the attention as they all do. That's why he hasn't come out and say Miami for sure. Vip members please post your comments where we all can read.

Thank You!!! Some of the comments I read on here are just funny! Some people have no clue of the hardship on some of these kids. Randy Shannon didn't know a lot of things, but one thing he did understand was the hardship of these kids trying to get to different events, which is why he never had JR days. I do feel he took it to far, but I did understand his reasoning. There's a kid name Mike McFarland, TE for USF, that signed with Florida coming out of high school and was one of the top basketball players in the state. I coached him and his brother in little league basketball a few years ago and if I didn't go pick him and his brother up from home, they would have to miss practice and games. Their family really were struggling and his mom really needed help with her boys. Long story short, some of these kids are just holding on.

He never had jr days because he was incompetent. A Miami kid might not can make it up to Tally or Gator country but in most cases he could find a way to get to Coral Gables.

I agree he wasnt the greatest, but he wasnt speaking about south florida kids coming to JR days. He was speaking of kids from other areas of the state or country attending.

Would you expect your kid to make a commitiment after only making 1 unofficial visit to 1 school. Give the kid a break.

That's cool. Kids from outside the state with interest will come though if finances allow them to. Golden has proved that much. I don't care about the rest of the state for the most part though... Keep the tri-county talent home & Miami wins at the highest level. Fact.

That is very true! I would be alright with 90-95% of our classes coming from Florida every year. I know we would win big with that talent!

I said nothing about me wanting him to commit. I, personally, could care less. You nor I know how many visits he has taken to the U. He lives close enough that he could catch the county buses to campus. He lives close enough that someone would be willing to give him a ride to campus, i.e....his 3 Miramar classmates committed or attending. I just said he doesn't know what a commitment truly means. Don't say you are committed to a marriage and then say you are going to look around, just say I am going to explore my available options. Thats what I teach my sons.
