How Many Kids Will Be Red-shirted in 2012?????

  • I've read on TOS that in the late 90s, Butch Davis red-shirted 19 kids from 98-99. As I look at this Big class we have coming, I can't help to think it's the right time to duplicate this feat.

    I honestly count at least 15-18 kids that needs to be red-shirted this upcoming season. It will give us great depth moving forward.

    What is your Opinion on this????????

    Some will develop better and quicker then others.

    It may be idel to RS most of these kids but I really think a lot of them will be making immediate contributions due to injuries, cuts, transfers, etc.

    10ish, I think the 2013 recruiting class will be about 15 or so.

    Red-shirting ten to fifteen this season would give us a bunch of freshmen next year.

    I count thirteen scholly seniors on the roster right now. Of that I think five will see playing time on d and only one well get playing time on o. ONLY ONE, that's pretty crazy.

    It might be easier to ask who will not red shirt this year. Flowers - Kirby - Duke - Howard - Bush - 2 of our WR's... I'm sure that there might be a few more, but yes, it's way to early to tell. I wouldn't be surprised if we had 20+ red shirts from this class.

    First of all whoever wrote that on TOS needs to do more research, because in 1998 & 1999 we signed 46 players total....30 of them redshirted, not 19.

    As far as this year's class, let's look at each position...

    QB - We should redshirt all 3.

    RB - Duke will play, Dillard should redshirt unless someone gets injured.

    WR - 3 should play/3 should redshirt.

    TE - n/a

    OL - All 3 should redshirt.

    DE - We have NO depth here, unfortunately we'll have to play 3 guys, Hoilett needs to redshirt because of his weight.

    DT - Redshirt all 3.

    LB - Play Kirby & Witt, redshirt the other 2.

    CB - Ugh. Our CB's are trash, so play Gunter, Bush, Howard & Crawford, redshirt the other 3.

    S - Redshirt Jenkins.

    So i think we should play 13 freshman next year, redshirt 20.

    Wow, 30 in 2 years sounds even better!

    I hope we could do this in the future and I hope AG starts with the 2012 class. 20 this year and maybe about 10 more in 2013 sounds good to me.

    Very nice list! This seems like a best case scenario. If we're going with 80 scholarships, then IDK how many dudes we can redshirt. A good percentage of these guys need to fill special teams positions. I'm sure AG will figure something out that makes sense. Its safe to say that he makes decisions based on reason and not politics, unlike our good ol' friend Randy pukeface

  • I'm sure Golden will try and red shirt as many as possible unless it's a position of need..
    Let's not forget NFL teams only have 53 man roster and they manage ... College team has 85 so it's possible to red shirt at least 15... I would think...

    All 3 qb definitely redshirt, unless both Morris and Williams gets hurt. We only played one qb most of the year last year.

    Plus Dewey needs as much practice as he can get since he's missed an entire season.

  • I really believe AG should redshirt players from the 2012 class that won't play.... Don't let them waste a year... I feel as though AG gives all the players a opportunity, starting in March til August... We definately need freshman to step up and be ready to play, but the ones that has no chance or needs more development we must redshirt them... After the CUT happens, we will beable to see where we stand!!! FEAR THE GOLDEN TIE

    You didn't mention the WR spot, we definately need at least 2 or 3 to step in right away... And Duke will be a swing player for us, playing in the slot spot at WR and also will be in the backfield as well... The DT spot is not a big need at this point, but time will tell.... I really believe the CB spot is wide open, McGee and Finnie are the front runners with a depth issue behind them... Gunter, Howard, Crawford, Davis, and Bush all will have a chance to earn playing time.... FEAR THE GOLDEN TIE

  • In 2012 we will have 80 players on scholarship, and we need about 66 to fill the depth squad, so I see only about 14 redshirting.

    The depth chart is a 2-deep not a 3-deep. We could easily get away with 60 active players.

    Of all the olineman Isidora has to be the least likely of the three to play this year. Both Flowers & Gadbois are in for spring ball & Gadbois played an extra year of prep ball last year. Those two will be the most ready to contribute right away.
