Saw his name mentioned in a thread yesterday and wanted to elaborate a little more about his performance and skill set. I for one respect the young man and his comeback story is remarkable. Nonetheless at the end of the day its about performance. He led the team tackles and I don't want to diminish this feat but I would trade those tackles for at the very last 5 sacks and some QB pressures. Is he really the best DE after Chickillo? Are Jelani Hamilton, Kelvin Cain, Tyriq McCord Dwayne Hoilett, Ricardo Williams, Dyron Dye, David Perry that far behind him? Is this an issue of loyalty? Because I believe Alquadin Mohammed and Bond (Should be a DE permanently ) are better players than him right now without them being on campus. Yet I don't see anybody starting or playing more than him. Coaches love him. I don't see it. Your thoughts?
I agree 100%... Apparently noone's outplayed or outworked him thus far though... I was expecting Jelani Hamilton to push him this spring, but he didn't and then got injured... I do think Kelvin Cain will get a good amount of reps on 2nd and 3rd downs...
No other player on the team is physically where he is, McCord and Hamilton are only sophomores and they will wear down fast starting at this point. You want pass rushers ready to rush on 3rd and long and passing plays, not using up their legs on rushing downs, no back-up DE is as good against the rush as Green is. Also lets wait and see how AQM and Bond look against D-1 players before we pass judgement that they can come in and automatically be better. Is Green going to put up huge sack numbers? No, but is he going to be consistent and the same guy every play? Yes.
No I did not lose a sig bet, but I am really really really ridiculously good looking.
No one is arguing whether he's solid... He's just doesn't have even a drop of "dynamic"... The guy was on the field the whole season last year and was 8th of the team in TFL and had ZERO sacks... ZERO is far away from putting up "huge sack numbers"... Ur right though, he is our best option right now, but still a weak-average option...

To me None of the current guys we have are Dynamic, I mean I want to see some serious improvement cause 13 sacks is pathetic for the total Defense.
He is average. But he wasn't even on the field in the pass rush package. Also the guy who led the team in sacks only had 4. When you don't blitz and play gap control sacks aren't going to happen very much.
I don't want this to be a bashing Shayon Green thread because I admire his ability to come back and I think he can hold his own in the run game, but he NEVER makes plays... Forget the pass rush package, he isn't getting in the backfield and making plays on rushing down (hence the super low TFL)... I do think he can improve though and I hope he does cause we need better play all across our DLine... btw, the Dtackles getting owned all of last year definitely didn't help green so i'll give him that...
How does a guy that leads the team in tackles not make plays????? Yes, he doesn't have the quickness to get to the quarterback but it seems like he is not the only one of the squad that lacks that ability. I think the pass rush will improve this year with more blitz packages and guys coming in on passing downs but when it comes to an every down DE, Shayon is by far one of the best we have. Not even close.
That's why I don't understand people hating Coach D.... Look what he has to work with.
No flame intended. Just being honest.
Golden is better then Jimbo... I feared it was true. He is going to hoist a crystal ball there - fsufsu
You do realize you just explained the whole d-line right? Green played better than the 3 guys next to him.
i dont know if i agree, as its hard to form an opinion not seeing someone play with the team (bond/aqm). i do respect the question you asked however and feel its a valid point. i dont know what i'd prefer it being an issue with loyalty, or that he is just that much better. in either case we are still screwed (unless your right about bond/aqm).
i tend to lean towards its not an issue of loyalty as AG has proved he will play the youngsters. lets hope AG just felt that the rest of the cast needed to grow more, physically.
Carter and sometimes Bill Baskin
i agree with you lamp. although i dont like the bend but dont break style of Def, i completely understand why its been implemented. lets hope that he sees that method as a stop gap, vise the identity of future defenses.
couple this with the fact that secondary plays an off/prevent coverage
Because if he doesn't like the talent then he should go out there and recruit better talent....I love Shayon Greens game but he def can't rush worth a lick but Jelani Hamilton seemed pretty good at passing downs, overall we'll be much better
The staff has went out and recruited better pass rushing talent but a 5 year old 3 legged bulldog is still stronger than a puppy.
Who fault really is that, If you are a coordinator you Gotta make sure you have better talent, I can't understand why our Defensive talent is so Bad, I would be going after the top players at the Juco and at High Schools relentlessly every single year.
I just don't think the top guys are attracted to Coach D schemes.
Their second class hasn't even fully arrived yet chill out. (not counting the 1 month they had to prepare for the 1st class.
Brick by Brick
"There's going to be a lot of people who didn't stand with us who are going to be remembered for not standing with us,"
This was going be my next point. I was an avid Coach D basher. However after reevaluating, if Shayon for example is the best we can do after Chickillo than we are asking a lot from Donofrio. He would be lucky to be 3rd string on FSU's Dline for example. There is a huge discrepancy in talent there.
Other than an EA sports mentality what exactly makes you think any of the names you mentioned are better than Green. McCord and AQ are have the most potential but give up 30+lbs and 3-4 years experience, . The other names on your list have rarely even been mentioned by the staff and struggle to crack the 3 deep much less the 2 deep. Not mention McCord and AQ are pass rushers not every down lineman.
My question to you, What makes Shayon an every down player? Clearly he is irrelevant on 3rd down. What Im trying to figure out, which is why I wrote the thread, is there such a gap in talent between Shayon and the rest of the Defensive Lineman? If there is indeed a large gap than D'nofrio needs to be cut some slack because our pass rush is one of if not one the greatest areas of concern for our team.
Huge talent gap, our best pass rushing DE's are true sophomores. 2 of which needed to RS. Miami has zero depth on D, something AG is working on, that's the whole reason he signed so many kids last year and some reaches.
