Cane Hunt ’13: OLB | UPDATES:
9/24/12: Blake Munroe of 247Sports reported, "Booker T. Washington (Miami, Fla.) was in Dallas recently to play one of the state’s top 5A programs in Cedar Hill. The Miami school is absolutely loaded with talent, most notably 2013 linebacker Matthew Thomas, ranked No. 10 overall by 247Sports, and four-star offensive tackle Denver Kirkland. Both prospects have received their fair share of attention from top programs, but neither seems close to a decision quite yet.
As for Thomas, the blue chip defensive playmaker has it narrowed down to three schools, but still plans to take his time.
“Right now he’s sitting with Miami, Alabama and Florida State as his top three,” said Booker T. Washington assistant coach Pierre Senatus. “He’s already visited Miami and Florida State, but wants to see Alabama. He hasn’t been there yet.”
Senatus says Thomas was impressed with his first two visits to two of Florida’s top universities.
“His first one was Florida State,” explained Senatus. “He had a great time there and really enjoyed the campus. Matthew had nothing but good things to say. Then he went to Miami and really liked it a lot. I think one of the main reasons is that he hit it off with the coaching staff there. He felt very comfortable with Coach (Al) Golden. They made him feel like family. Once again, he had plenty of great things to say about that visit. He loved it.”

Cane Hunt ’13: OLB | UPDATES: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10/3/12: Peter Ariz of CanesInSight, wrote about Matthew Thomas on Sunday...
"The hometown University of Miami has recently made a big move for Thomas’ services. At the beginning of process he says he wasn’t really feeling them as much, but things have changed according to him.
“I like Miami a lot, just the fact that it’s home and I like seeing them play. I grew up with Miami and I just love seeing them play the young guys because that has really caught my eye. I really like the coaching staff a lot, they’re cool guys. I’m talking to coach Barrow, coach Golden, and coach D’Onofrio. The University itself is just awesome so Miami is in great shape for me.”
There have been rumors for months that Thomas’ mother would like for him to stay home, which is something he says is true.
“She tells me about stuff, gives me her opinion on things ‘cause she’s been to the school and has given me her opinion. She tells me it would be best for me to stay here, but she’ll also support whatever decision I make.”
How important is it to Thomas for his family to be able to be at his games?
“It’s somewhat important for them to see my games. My mom is from another country so she’s never really seen me play. My brothers like to see me play too so they can watch me on TV, but I’d like for them to be in the stands cheering me on and giving me that support and drive.”
He says that there is no timetable for his decision.
“If I’m ready, then I’ll just go ahead and commit, but if not I’ll just ride it out until signing day.”

Cane Hunt ’13: OLB | UPDATES:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
10/29/12: Last week, Tom Loy of Noles247posted an article on Miami (Fla.) Booker T. Washington cornerback Nigel Patten. The article focused on Patten’s experience at the Miami-FSU game the week before. Here’s the pertinent paragraphs.“Patten got to the game a few hours before kickoff and spent some time on the field with the other recruits. Right before game time, a few of his high-profile teammates showed up and they all watched the game together.
“Treon Harris from my class (2014), Matthew Thomas and Denver Kirkland showed up just before the game started,” Patten mentioned. “Matt and Denver had a good time. You know, growing up, we all grew up fans of ‘The U’, so there was some cheering for them, but the crowd couldn’t help them get that win.”
Doesn’t sound like good news for the Noles. Go Canes!

Cane Hunt ’13: OLB | UPDATES: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- UPDATE: 11/04/12 – Today, Corey Dowlar of ESPN.com filed this interesting report, “Patten enjoys rivalry game”
“Florida State's victory over arch-rival Miami was witnessed by some high-caliber recruits two weeks ago. Arguably, the Booker T. Washington group consisting of Matthew Thomas, Denver Kirkland, Treon Harris and Nigel Patten were the most important.
Patten, an offered junior defensive back, relished seeing two of his favorite teams go head to head in a physical bout.
"I thought it was great," he said. "It was a hard-fought game. Miami manned up to the competition. Florida State, with all the good recruiting classes, I feel like they were able to do what they did. It probably should have been a blowout."
Patten wasn't about to play favorites, though. Whether it was the chop, or throwing up the "U," he tried to distribute his cheering evenly.
"I was rooting for both of them," Patten said. "Anytime one of them scored, I would throw up their sign."
That may have not been the case for the other three Tornadoes. Growing up in the shadows of UM, it was the orange and green that had their attention.
"I know Treon Harris, Matthew Thomas and Denver Kirkland were all going for Miami," Patten said. "We all grew up wanting Miami to win in that type of rivalry game."
The 33-20 win may have had some impact on other prospects that were there, but for Patten, it really wasn't a huge factor. He is more concerned with matters off the field.
"It doesn't matter," he said. "It comes down to who recruits you the hardest and things like that."
About a month ago, Patten seriously considered committing to Florida State. He even went as far to say so on social media.
But after having a chance to think things over, the 2014 corner figured it would be better to let things play out a little longer.
"I thought it was Florida State, but now I don't really know," Patten said. "I like both teams. Miami played their freshmen defensive backs. Florida State starts their young defensive backs as freshmen. They keep them going from there."
Did you notice Patten’s comment about Thomas and Kirkland? Hmmm…
