Reggie Johnson’s tip-in with 0.8 seconds left gave the 14th-ranked Miami Hurricanes a 79-78 win over No. 19 N.C. State on Saturday.
Miami (17-3, 8-0) went on an 8-2 run to close the game, which included Johnson’s left-handed tip-in following a miss by Shane Larkin.
Johnson scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half for Miami, which has won nine straight.
C.J. Leslie led N.C. State (16-6, 5-4) with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
A 3-pointer by Scott Wood gave N.C. State a 74-69 left with three minutes left.
After a bucket by Johnson, Leslie made a pair of free throws to keep the lead at five.
Then Scott helped lead Miami down the stretch. He made two free throws followed by a layup. Then, Scott split a pair of free throws with 55 seconds left to pull UM within 78-76.
Leslie missed a free throw, then fouled Scott to put him on the line and once again, Scott split a pair to make it 78-77 with 47 seconds left.
Tyler Lewis’ 18-foot jumper missed with 17 seconds left setting up Johnson’s heroics.
Miami trailed 40-34 at halftime.
After Kadji scored the first four points after the break, N.C. State went on a 14-6 run to take a 54-44 lead.
The Hurricanes battled back and took a 63-62 lead with 8:32 left on a lay-up by Scott, who picked off a pass by Lewis and raced in for Miami’s first lead since mid-way through the first half.
Miami jumped out to a 17-8 lead in the early going before N.C. State responded with a 17-5 run.
