Five Thoughts on South Florida Game

Stephen Morris

Stephen Morris threw for 413 yards and three touchdowns to lead Miami to a 40-9 win over South Florida.

The 'Canes came away with a dominating win over South Florida. So what did we see in the win?

Rudy let's say you are the AD. How would you handle the crowd and Stadium thing. Would you have a fund raiser, etc, etc, etc.

That was crazy seeing a crowd like that today.

My name brandon not rudy but how I would handle the crowd is with a new stadium. Ok we heard they like sun life yada yada but is money a issue? If say we can start a fun raiser at um. Build the u. Every cane fan donate money. Even if its a dollar it will go a long way in gettin our own stadium.

Unless Donna Shalala decides to crush everyone’s spirit and unnecessarily self impose a bowl ban this season now that Miami is bowl eligible.

Unnecessarily... Really? You're clearly in the minority here unless you want to sacrifice the future of the program.

As important as Denzel Perryman might be to the defense, he only finished with three tackles. Eddie Johnson only had five tackles. Miami’s defense needs to find a leader at linebacker. If it’s one of those two guys, they have to truly become tackling machines. When the ‘Canes were at their peak, Miami linebackers finished with ten tackles a game. Not to compare them to Ray Lewis, but Lewis had 153 tackles as a sophomore and 160 as a junior. Dan Morgan was also a tackling machine. To put it into perspective, Perryman and Johnson having combined for 112 tackles through 11 games. While they have both missed a couple of games, they would still not be anywhere near 153 tackles, let alone 160. They have to tackle and dominate games from their positions. Of course, that starts with having some defensive tackles that can play, but they do have to tackle better.

Denzel is clearly the leader at LB. You do realize he's been hurt & playing hurt for half the season & it's not like it's a hand or shoulder or rib, it's his ankle that effects his range & mobility. It's extremely difficult to amass 150 tackles in a year. To put that in perspective (your phrase of the day) Since 2003 only two players in the ACC have had 150+ tackles in a year (Luke Keuchly & Keyaron Fox). LB is not a position I'm worried about next year.

    • I been sayin a ban is not needed... everybody say we did nothing compared to the other schools but we should self impose another ban?? The other schools UNC, USC, OSU did neither suspend anyone or impose a ban and they were guilty by far for what they did, we suspended players and forfeited last year.. This year gloves are off if we beat duke play the damn game

    • Hey gang...

We have received our first official media endorsement for a new stadium. Thank you Rudy or Brandon or whoever. We have our own capital fund raising program. Keep up the pressure! The size of the crowd at the "Tomb" today was disgraceful. Our brand is being destroyed.

      Build The "U"!

    • Please explain why a bowl ban this year would be unnecessary? Id rather do that than have one next year or see more scholarship reductions. Nobody will remember or care how we did in the sun bowl this year if were still under a cloud of sanctions in 2-3 years

Totally against it. We gave up a bowl last year. What happened at Miami is not deserving of two bowl games. I don't care what anyone says. Ohio State got a one bowl ban. USC did far more than Miami and got two bowl games, USC was far worse. I don't care about Nevin Shapiro. You can't quantify a couple hundred bucks here and there to multiple players to buying Reggie Bush a house. There is a huge difference. What happened with Nevin Shapiro, a pissed off guy who is now broke and has no friends because he's broke, is not the same thing or even close to the things that went on at Miami in the 80s and 90s and all we got then was a one year bowl ban. The 80s and 90s were far worse than this Shapiro nonsense. These guys have a chance to play for the ACC Championship. I don't care if the record is 7-5. It's for an ACC Championship. Let's just say, Miami beats FSU in an upset. That's 8-5. Then Miami gets to play in the freaking Orange Bowl. Let's say, Miami wins that HOME game. You are talking 9-5. That's program changing. IF Donna Shalala self imposes a bowl ban this week, Miami will get smacked at Duke. These guys won't even show up to play. And the team will finish 6-6 and there will be ZERO hype for this program. Part of marketing is having something to market. It's hard to market 6-6 every year. 9-5 is a lot easier to market. Even 8-6 is. What I saw today in that stadium was a disgrace. I swear to God at 2:59 p.m. I asked the SID, aren't we a minute from kickoff? The place was absolutely empty. 2,000 maybe in the building. I am convinced Miami held the kickoff up 15-20 minutes for people to get inside. It's shameful, but I will tell you that Miami simply DOES NOT market this team. I live in South Florida. They don't advertise. They don't get out in the community. Heck, give the freaking tickets away. Get people in the building. But you have to make a connection with the community. OPEN PRACTICE UP TO THE PUBLIC IN THE SPRING! Make people care. Miami closing practices to the public has crippled itself. There is no connection to this team in any capacity. Al Golden has to wake up because he is the decision maker when it comes to opening up practice and he is the one that will truly make this team connect with the community. I have said it before and I will say it again, you get the MEDIA on your side, you will get the fans on your side. People will come. By being open with MEDIA and not lying and BSing the MEDIA and making it impossible to get any information, the MEDIA will not be your friend. Instead, the MEDIA will look for anything to hit. By being open with the MEDIA, you will get far more positive stuff out there. That's just my opinion. But this program absolutely fell apart when the locker room got closed to the MEDIA and Miami became everyone else.

Rudy let's say you are the AD. How would you handle the crowd and Stadium thing. Would you have a fund raiser, etc, etc, etc.

That was crazy seeing a crowd like that today.

First thing - Open practice in the Spring and Fall to the public and MEDIA up until the preparation week for the first game of the season. Spring and Fall practice is all about getting to know each other. Game planning is totally different. You open practice at least twice a week to the MEDIA during the season. You can restrict us from video taping, but allow us to take pictures and report on practice. It keeps people in the loop. It makes a connection.

Second thing - Get out in the community. ADVERTISE! There is zero advertising with this program. I swear the Director of Marketing at UM is getting a free salary because I've not seen one thing to market this program in 10 years. A couple of radio commercials on 560 AM is not the way to market it. You have to reach out to people.

Third thing - LOWER THE PRICES! The tickets to UM games are a freaking rip off. The public can't even buy a decent ticket unless they donate a grand to the Hurricane Club. That's shameful. They can't sell season tickets because they have so many restrictions on buying the tickets. It costs me less for THREE season tickets to the Miami Dolphins than it does for one season ticket to the Miami Hurricanes. Reason being, I have to donate money BEFORE I can buy a decent ticket to a 'Canes game. That's BS. Get rid of that. It doesn't work. The crap tickets to a 'Canes game cost $20 minimum. Now, you tack on the $20-$25 to park. You could go to the Orange Bowl and not pay a cent to park if you parked 10 blocks away. 10 blocks away at Sun Life you still pay $20 because 10 blocks away is the outside Orange Lot. They are more worried about raising money for the Hurricane Club than they are selling tickets and getting people in the building. The thing is, winning brings new donors. No one wants to invest disposable income into a trash product. So they've made it even tougher on people to buy tickets so people don't.

Those are three things I would do. I don't care about having a fund raiser. That's not marketing the program. That's just raising money. I am talking about straight marketing. Market your team. Go to high schools. Treat it like you would treat a club, flyer it up. Get out to your students. You have to make people excited.

And at this point, yes you need a stadium closer to school or on the school grounds somewhere. Raising money I am not an expert at, but you know what, if the Commission is willing to give the Marlins 400 million bucks to build a stadium, it will give it to the 'Canes too if Donna Shalala tries to ask. Pay off the right Commissioners and it gets done just like the Marlins got it done.

I think most fans want to be on your side Rudy, but in my opinion the NCAA is a crock of shit and they might slam us just because of the media blowout once the story hit in August 2011...but I do agree with you that this is a huge opportunity and Miami has to be very careful with it...its a rough situation for the administration

Absolutely unnecessary. This program has no future right now. The last seven years is a history of average and mediocrity. You can't build on 6-6. What happens if you sacrifice your bowl game and then the NCAA adds a THIRD bowl game. Then what? People are acting like what Miami did is so much worse than USC and it's not worse. Not even close. Heck, what Miami did isn't even as bad as what went on in the 80s and 90s.

That's fine. Denzel Perryman is a shoddy tackler as is everyone else on this defense. Ankle doesn't keep you from wrapping up. I didn't say to have 150 tackles, but 130? Is that too much to ask for from your linebackers. When Nate Webster and Dan Morgan lined up side by side, both of them were over 130 tackles. That's just my opinion.

Because we could actually be in the ORANGE BOWL this year. If we had no chance for the ACC Championship, I'd say screw it and take the ban. But a win over Duke and this team has a chance to play in the Orange Bowl with an upset over FSU. It's that simple. And it's dollars and cents too.

      Rudy_RC

    • It's pretty simple.

If the NCAA views the situation similarly to how Rudy views it, we don't self impose a bowl ban. I agree that our transgressions are lesser than that of UNC, OSU, or USC. In a game with fair rules, we don't deserve a two year bowl ban.

But we're not playing under fair rules. I don't think that the NCAA will agree, and that's why the bowl ban makes sense. I think the NCAA has at least one more bowl loss in store for us. I don't think the NCAA is being quite as flippant about our transgressions as Rudy is.

So do we take it now, when we're 6-5, despite our chances at the ACCCG? Or do we enjoy the fruits of our labor this year, and saddle next year's team (which should be better...) with the ban?

Unless Miami has intel suggesting the NCAA sees things more like Rudy does, then not imposing a bowl ban would be quite stupid.

And if you want to talk pitches for the future, which is easier to sell: A) The NCAA investigation will have no effect on your son's football experience, or B) This season we're about to undergo, your son's freshman year, is for naught -- we're paying for our 2009 sins in 2013.

A is the no-brainer...unless Miami knows something.
